Working as a front line Paramedic or Patient Transport Officer is a physically and emotionally tolling and stressful job - the importance of regular breaks of considerable duration is paramount. Fatigue related issues can have a detrimental effect on not only the health and safety of the Paramedic, but can also potentially affect the ability of the Paramedic to deliver quality health care. Frequently Paramedics and Patient Transport Officers are denied these breaks due to excessive workloads, a condition which under the new Award presented by the Ambulance Service of NSW is likely to increase due to the lost incentive of penalties to workers who are not allocated a break in a timely fashion. The fact that crews are working under these conditions further illustrates the mismatch between available resources and an ever increasing workload. Questions have to be raised as to whether ambulance resources are truly keeping up with demands placed upon operational Paramedic crews.

Below are reports from our members of shifts finished without a single break, bearing in mind shifts can range from 9 to over 12 hours without overtime.

1. 26/08/2010 Springwood Station, Sydney Division.
   Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and were tasked to a case soon after. The crew worked continuously throughout the day and did not return to station until 7:50pm. Crew signed off at 8:00pm, shift in excess of 13 hours with no break.
   
   
2. 19/08/2010 Richmond Station, Sydney Division.
   Afternoon shift crew signed on at  11:00am. They worked solidly and did not see station again until 12:20am, shift in excess of 13 hours with no break.
   
   
3. 10/08/2010 Concord Station, Sydney Division.
   Campsie Station day crew signed on at 7:00pm then sent to Concord Station. Worked through until sign off at 7:50pm. Shift in excess of 12 hours with no break.
   
   
4. 09/08/2010 Parramatta Station, Sydney Division.
   Single officer from Riverstone sent over to Parramatta to pair up with single officer from St Ives. Crew signed on at 11:00am and worked though until 12:20am. Shift in excess of 13 hours with no break.
   
   
5. 22/06/2010 Ryde Station, Sydney Division.
   Day crew signed on at 7:00am; first case at 7:30am. Crew worked through until return to station at 8:30pm. Shift in excess of 13 hours with no break.
   
   

6. 15/06/2010 Concord Station, Sydney Division.
   Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and were immediately tasked to a case. Crew didn’t sign of until 7:50pm. Shift in excess of 12 hours and no break

7. 04/06/2010 Ryde Station, Sydney Division.
   Day crew signed on at 7:00am; first case at 7:15am. Crew did not return to station and sign off until 7:45pm. Shift in excess of 12 hours and no break.

8. 20/05/2010 Auburn Station, Sydney Division.
   Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and worked though until 7:45pm. Shift in excess of 12.5 hours with no break.
   
   
9. 19/05/2010 Riverstone Station, Sydney Division.
   Day shift crew signed on and were assigned to another station for the day; they departed at 7:00am. They worked through until their return at 8:00pm. 13 hours with no break.
   
   
10. 16/05/2010 Castle Hill Station, Sydney Division.
    Day shift crew started at 7:00am and  worked though until sign off at 7:45pm. Shift in excess in 12 hours without a break.
    
    
11. 08/05/2010 Warragamba Station, Sydney Division.
    Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and worked through until they were able to sign off at 9:05pm. Shift in excess of 14 hours and no break.

    Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and worked through until they were finally able to sign off at 9:45pm. 14 hours and 45 minutes with no break.

14. 04/05/2010 Penrith Station, Sydney Division.
    Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and didn’t see station until sign off at 8:00pm. 13 hours with no break.

    Day shift crew signed on 7:00am and worked though until they were able to sign off at 8:15pm. 13 hours and 15 minutes with no break.

    Day shift crew signed on at 7:00am and didn’t see station until sign off at 10:00pm. 15 hours with no break.
    
    
17. 27/04/2010 Riverstone Station, Sydney Division.
    Afternoon shift crew assigned to first case two minutes before sign on at 10:58am. Crew didn't sign off until 1:30am the next morning, 2.5 hours after the end of shift. The crew were not given a break. During their shift they were assigned to a non urgent transfer during the time they were due to have
    their second break and given a case at 10:30pm, half an hour before they were due to sign off.
    
    
18. 08/04/10 Riverstone Station, Sydney Division.
    Shift commenced at 7am; first case at 7:35am. Crew didn’t return to the station until 7:55pm. Shift in excess of 12hrs and no break was offered.
    
    
19. 20/03/10 - Bondi Station, Sydney Division.
    Shift commenced at 7pm; crew actually left the station prior to commencement of shift due to workload. First crib break commenced at 1:00am but interrupted for a case at 1:05am. Crew then missed their second meal break and didn’t sign off until 9:10am having only received a 5 minute break for a total shift in excess of 14 hours.
